Parker Tonight - Literacy & Laughter Saturday

Just wanted to quickly remind you of the highly anticipated talk tonight by Chaim Roseberg on his new book The Life and Times of Francis Cabot Lowell, 1775-1815. The talk begins at 7PM in the Ground Floor Community Room and is free and open to the public thanks to the good folks at the Moses Greeley Parker Lecture Series.

We also wanted to tell you there is still time to sign up for the UFund Literacy program for kids aged 3-6 happening this Saturday at 10AM in the Ground Floor Community Room. This is a really fun program that encourages literacy and laughter by bringing in a costumed character to act out a story. Participants also receive a book to take home with them. You can stop by the Children's Desk or call 978-970-4122 to sign up. Sponsored by the UFund College Savings Plan.

The Pollard had a special visitor yesterday

The Pollard was pleased to welcome State Senator Eileen Donoghue yesterday, April 19, 2011. The former Lowell Mayor and City Councilor visited our library to take a brief tour and stop in on one of our April Vacation Programs. We were delighted to have her here and hope she visits again soon.

Autism Awareness Month

April is also National Autism Awareness Month. Our Children's Department has created a great display in the Ground Floor Lobby of the library and they have some great events planned including an online survey and a special storytime for World Autism Day. The latest installment of our Independent Film Night (2nd Thursday of Every Month). This film has not been rated by the MPAA and should be considered for a mature audience.

What Happened To Kerouac? by Richard Lerner & Lewis MacAdams

In celebration of Kerouac's Birthday we're showing this telling documentary about his life, celebrity, and tragic undoing. Don't miss the other Kerouac birthday celebrations going on in the city including the world premier of a film and an evening event featuring Pull My Daisy collaborator and style melding musical virtuoso David Amram. Winterfest Matinee - Eight Below - Saturday, February 5th @ 1PM

While enjoying the wonderful and wonderfully cold sights and sounds of Lowell's 11th Annual Winterfest Celebration, including the snowman competition and the famous National Human Dogsled Championship, we'd like to invite you to come in out of the cold and enjoy a Winterfest matinee movie about real dogsleds, pulled by real sled-dogs: Eight Below directed by Frank Marshall. Rated PG. This heartwarming family friendly adventure is based on a true story of a sled-dogteam in the wilds of Antartica.  Free and open to the public. This event sponsored by The Friends of the Library.
